White House Reveals Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

An analysis argued that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
