Sam Fender won the Mercury Prize last month in Newcastle

The artist has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

The star was given the prize on mid-October as his third album People Watching was chosen as the best record of the past year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the essential function grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally would not have achieved my current career if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the region, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are struggling."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which supports smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds assisted spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues caused by floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Other venues received financial assistance in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from shows in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

Fender is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to charitable organizations.

Back when the band won the award in 1996 for their record Different Class, frontman Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would give their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, musician she shared her prize among a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

In recent years, they contributed their winnings to the local youth club that developed their group, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year they gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was identified with the condition.

"Winning was quite enough," remarked singer Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had saved several local spots in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
