In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, though, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This figure is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show launched last October, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the implication is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with him to take the job. The presidency was effectively a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the state de facto.

• His list featured several politicians, among them a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per an expert who studied his rise, the chosen candidate simply fitted the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A businessman familiar with the events stated the key criterion was controllability and loyalty, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his clandestine activities in Dresden fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the move to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by the actor's arrival as 007. The grittier version led local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with his surfaced on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star popular with viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's omission of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. His influence is hinted at through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it might seek to question.
