After enduring torrential rains that caused flooding across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now grappling with unseasonably warm conditions for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Readings
By Friday afternoon, the temperature soared to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in the city center, as reported by the National Weather Service. This exceeds the prior high for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was set in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on NWS charts for the region.
Safety Alerts
Forecasters stated that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a hot car.
An Extreme Weather Swing
This sharp rise in mercury comes on the heels of a massive storm system that pummeled the area last week. That event unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, causing flash flood warnings for many residents.
Sadly, the severe weather also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Looking ahead cooler conditions is coming. Temperatures were predicted to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by Friday night.
Several cities that experienced ninety degrees featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Additionally, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to see the upper eighties.
For the weekend, downtown LA can anticipate readings in the 80s, with a further cooldown likely for the following week.
