Hurricane Melissa is forecast to strengthen into a rare highest-level cyclone as it turns toward Jamaica, causing deadly rapid inundation and rock falls.

The cyclone, which recorded wind speeds of up to 120 mph as of 06:00 GMT, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean region and is projected to make landfall by midweek, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Warnings of blackouts and structural damage have been issued as the hurricane produces up to 76cm of rainfall and sea level surges as high as 13ft above ground. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th named storm in the current Atlantic season, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.

Highest-Level Storm Threat

A highest-level hurricane is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

Even though this storm is projected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 cyclone before reaching the island, experts said there was "very little practical difference in the general consequences" upon reaching the coast, and that the hurricane will be "just as powerful" when it strikes the nation.

Locals are being told to fortify their houses with sand barriers and timber panels, and to accumulate basic necessities.

Advisories are also ongoing for parts of Haiti such as the primary urban center, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where the hurricane is projected to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.

Rock slides presently generated by the storm have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to local authorities.

Melissa is projected to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Antillas Mayores and entering the open ocean.

By the moment it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is predicted to have diminished to a Category 3 cyclone.
