A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
