American Armed Forces Executes Lethal Attack in Eastern Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths
According to a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American military executed a lethal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Only on the previous day, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Tactics Amid Pressure
The government has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to confirm a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
